- The manufacturing process for MSM utilises dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and hydrogen peroxide. DMSO has previously been used in similar therapeutic areas to MSM. Depending on the grade of the DMSO used as a reaction intermediate it can contain a variety of impurities, it has also been found to cause a range of adverse reactions. Bergstrom Nutrition tightly controls the limits of DMSO and any potential impurities derived from it in MSM.
- There are two manufacturing processes that are commonly employed in the synthesis of MSM - crystallisation and distillation. OptiMSM® is manufactured by distillation; this process is the most effective for minimising impurities and contaminants such as DMSO, phenol, heptane, benzene and heavy metals. In addition to this, the distillation process results in a very low moisture content which helps to minimise the risk of microbial contamination.
- The quality of the reaction intermediates used to manufacture MSM are critical to ensuring an appropriate quality raw material with acceptable levels of residual solvents, impurities, microbial and heavy metal contamination. Bergstrom Nutrition tightly controls all reaction intermediates employed in the manufacture of OptiMSM®.
- Due to the manufacturing process employed for OptiMSM®, the acceptance criteria for heavy metals is very low, with the analysis of heavy metals determined via atomic absorption spectroscopy, and not less specific wet chemistry methods as used by other manufacturers. As products containing MSM are normally taken long term and in high doses there are therefore no long term safety concerns with products formulated using OptiMSM®.
